More About J Boogie’s Dubtronic Science

What’s the origin story of your crew? How did you come together? Who were the founding members? What inspired your name?

I started Dubtronic Science in the late ’90s to blend live instrumentation with my DJ sets. After hearing a conga player at a rave, and a flutist jam with Mark Farina, I started by playing SXSW with the Jazz Mafia horns jumping in on my vinyl set and I realized how powerful that fusion could be. From there, I started inviting sitar players, drummers, vocalists—anyone down to jam. The name reflects that blend: dub, electronic, and the experimental energy of the lab.

How would you describe the J Boogie’s Dubtronic Science Community? What vibes can people expect coming to one of your parties?

I’ve had the honor of performing for several generations in The Bay from the 90s till now. With the opportunity to share music with ALL types of folks, I feel like we connect with a diversity of folks that represent the Bay Area. We blend a mix of hip hop, soul, disco, house, reggae and international sounds with live horns, flute, vocals and percussion. Eclectic vibes!

Who or what influences your sets the most? Genres, eras, mentors, movements — what shapes your sound?

The people on the dance floor influence us the most! We react and improvise based on what the crowd feels and grooves on. As an artist there are countless DJs, musicians, and dancers that shape our sound.

How has the Bay Area shaped your identity as a crew?

The diversity of The Bay has influenced us and made sure we can represent multiple cultures musically at once. The City is also cyclical, always changing, always re-inventing itself. I feel like I’ve lived in several different San Franciscos in 30+ years and that helps push the sound to renew and refresh. I always feel like we have that Bay Area sound and vibe.

How do you stay connected to your community outside of the booth? Where and when can we catch you outside of MINTED SF?

I connect with the community through public radio on KALW 91.7FM. You can catch me on-air every Friday night from 10pm till midnight, or peep the archives via KALW.ORG or JBoogie.com.
